Becky Hill is herself spinal cord injured following a car accident in 1990, at age 17, but has never let her injury define her. Fiercely independent, Becky returned to school to complete her A-Levels, obtain a degree and subsequent Masters before entering the world of work.
She worked for over sixteen years as an HR Manager at BT, fulfilling a variety of roles, including an HR Project Role for BT’S London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Partnership.
Now Chair of Trustees in her second term of office, Becky has been an avid supporter of Back Up over many years, having benefitted directly from the charity when newly injured. Her positive spirit owes a lot to the doctrine promoted by Back Up. She is also a group leader and mentor and co-facilitates the Back to Work course, combining her HR expertise and her voluntary role. Becky was awarded Charity Chair of the Year in the 2014 Third Sector Awards.
More recently Becky has set-up her own business offering freelance charity and HR consultancy services whilst running an inclusive tourism operation, Endeavour UK. Endeavour UK provides tours and safaris for those with mobility considerations in Southern Africa as well as an accessible holiday let, in Poole Dorset.
‘Back Up - Addressing the psychological impact of spinal cord injury’
Every eight hours someone in the UK sustains a spinal cord injury through accident or illness which leaves them permanently paralysed. It happens in an instant and the impact on the individual and those around them can be catastrophic. Back Up makes a positive difference to the lives of thousands of people every year. Back Up is a national charity which specifically focuses on the psychological impact of spinal cord injury - providing rehabilitative courses, mentoring, training in wheelchair skills and support getting back to school or work. All their services build confidence and independence and are delivered by a supportive network of people who understand life with spinal cord injury because they’ve been there themselves. They listen and show the possibilities, based on the strong belief that life isn’t over, it’s a new life just beginning. Focusing primarily on their mentoring service, the presentation will bring this concept to life.
